THE OLD GROCERY

In the Lower Market of Ossa, which was once the historical, economic, social and administrative center of the village, and which in recent decades has remained neglected and degraded, the association took the initiative and proceeded to restore and revive an old grocery store.

The reuse works started with cleaning, disinfestation and disinfection of the space, while at the same time the objects that would be included in the old grocery store were collected. Then the existing wooden elements of the building were preserved - floors, ceilings, shelves and frames - and the newer metal door was removed and replaced with a new wooden, traditional type. Walls and floors were plastered, the oil paint covering the windows was removed, the necessary color interventions were made and the establishment and representation of the grocery store was followed - as much as possible - as it was kept in the memory of the residents during its 60-year operation. The wooden bench and display cases, the old scales and boxes, the boxes with the threads and buttons, the cupboards and bottles, the old student bags and all kinds of boxes and product packaging, as well as many rare metal billboards, were placed. in the area of the old grocery store to evoke nostalgic memories of the older ones and to "tell" pages of modern history to the younger ones.

With the reuse of the old grocery store, another cultural space was added to the traditional settlement, after the re-exhibition of the "Folklore Collection of Ossa". In fact, the action for the maintenance and reuse of the "Old Grocery" was received by the Ministry of Culture. the mark of the European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018 (EYCH 2018), due to the seriousness of the project and its special character, which contributes to the protection and promotion of the cultural heritage of our country and the EU in general.
